Which is Better Vertical Axis or Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine

horzintal-vertical wind turbines

Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) are wind turbines that the rotating shaft mounted vertically relative to the ground level it makes 90 degrees angle withe the ground , the Horizontal  axis wind turbines (HAWT) are  wind turbines with the rotating shaft mounted parallel to the ground level ,it makes 0 angle with the ground , so what is the differences between the horizontal and vertical wind turbines ?

  • the HAWT needs high speed to run , but the vertical VAWT can run on low speeds.
  • the efficiency of the VAWT is from 50-60% but for HAWT the efficiency is 70% or more.
  • HAWT needs steering mechanism to be faced toward the wind stream , but the VAWT can run in any direction
  • the HAWT are more noisy than the VAWT.
  • the HAWT tends to fail more frequently , due to either fatigue or vibration , but VAWT are rarely fails.
  • the HAWT  needs more complicated maintenance than the VAWT.
  • the gearbox is not required for VAWT , but required for HAWT.
  • the generator mounted on the ground for VAWT , but on the top of the tower for HAWT.
